Overview
This demonstration project shows the parts every serious SaaS product needs before its first unique feature: separate workspaces for each customer, invitations and roles, plans with seat and usage limits, self-service billing, and a console for the operator to see tenants, subscriptions and system health.
The example product is a project and team workspace, but the same foundation carries a booking tool, a vertical CRM or an internal platform turned into a product. Getting these foundations right early is what lets an MVP grow without a rewrite.
The challenge
Founders often start a SaaS by building the idea itself and bolting accounts and payments on later. The result is data from different customers mixed in the same tables, permissions checked in some screens but not others, billing handled manually, and no overview of who is using what. Each new customer then adds risk instead of revenue.
The solution
The concept treats tenancy, permissions and billing as the core, not an add-on. Every record belongs to a workspace and every query is scoped to it. Roles define what members can see and do, and changes are written to an audit log. Plans set limits that the app enforces, subscriptions and invoices are handled by the billing provider with webhooks keeping the app in sync, and the operator console shows MRR, trials, churn and support at a glance.
Key features
- Workspaces per customer with strict data separation
- Invitations, roles and permissions per workspace
- Plans with seat, storage and usage limits
- Self-service billing, invoices and payment methods
- Audit log of sensitive actions
- Operator console with tenants, MRR, trials and churn
- Feature flags and background jobs
- Single sign-on via OpenID Connect on higher plans
Who it is for
- Founders turning an idea into a SaaS MVP
- Companies productising an internal tool
- Agencies launching a subscription product
- Teams whose SaaS outgrew a no-code prototype
Technical approach
A Next.js application with server-side data access serves both the customer app and the operator console, with authorization checked on the server for every action. PostgreSQL through Prisma stores workspaces, members, roles and usage; Redis caches sessions and rate limits, and BullMQ runs background jobs such as usage aggregation and emails. Billing uses the provider's subscriptions and customer portal, and the app ships as Docker images for predictable deployments.

Questions about this type of project
Is this a real SaaS product?
No. It is a demonstration project with sample workspaces, users and invoices. It shows the multi-tenant foundation Saad builds before the product-specific features.
What is included in a SaaS MVP?
Usually sign-up and workspaces, roles, the core feature that solves your customer's problem, subscription billing and a basic admin view. Everything else is planned in phases after real users give feedback.
How is customer data kept separate in a multi-tenant SaaS?
Every record carries its workspace, and every query and action on the server is scoped to the signed-in member's workspace and role. Isolation is enforced in one place and covered by tests, not left to individual screens.
