Three phone screens of the customer app: shop discovery, live courier tracking on a map and order status timeline

Overview

This demonstration project shows a complete mobile product for local delivery — shops, kitchens and pharmacies delivering within a city. It consists of three connected parts: a customer app to order and follow the delivery on a map, a courier app to accept jobs, navigate and confirm delivery, and a web dashboard where dispatch assigns orders and watches the whole zone live.

Customers without the app get an SMS with a tracking link, so every order can be followed. Both apps are built with Flutter from one codebase for iOS and Android.

The challenge

Local businesses that deliver often coordinate by phone and chat: customers call to ask where their order is, couriers get addresses by message, and nobody sees which courier is free. Marketplace delivery platforms solve this but take a large commission and own the customer relationship. Building native apps separately for iOS and Android doubles the cost and time.

The solution

The concept connects everyone to the same live order. When an order is placed, dispatch — manually or by rules — offers it to a nearby courier, who accepts it in the app. The courier's position is shared while the job is active, the customer sees the courier on a map with an arrival estimate, and push notifications mark each step. Delivery is confirmed with a photo or signature, and the dashboard shows active orders, courier status and delivery times.

Key features

  • Customer app to browse shops, order and pay
  • Live courier tracking on a map with arrival estimate
  • Courier app with job offers, navigation and shift status
  • Proof of delivery with photo and signature
  • Push notifications at every order step
  • SMS tracking link for customers without the app
  • Dispatch dashboard with live map and order assignment
  • One Flutter codebase for iOS and Android

Who it is for

  • Restaurants, bakeries and shops that deliver locally
  • Pharmacies and florists with their own couriers
  • Logistics start-ups building a delivery service
  • Businesses leaving high-commission delivery platforms

Technical approach

The customer and courier apps are written in Flutter with a shared design system and API client. A Node.js API with PostgreSQL through Prisma stores orders, couriers and events; live positions travel over WebSockets and are cached in Redis so the dashboard and tracking pages stay light. Maps and routing use the Google Maps Platform, notifications go through Firebase Cloud Messaging and SMS, and the dispatch dashboard is a Next.js web app.

Questions about this type of project

Is this app available in the app stores?

No. It is a demonstration project with sample shops, orders and couriers. It shows how Saad designs and builds a cross-platform mobile app with a live tracking backend.

Why Flutter for a mobile app?

Flutter builds iOS and Android apps from one codebase with native performance, so features ship to both platforms at the same time and maintenance costs stay lower than two separate apps.

How does live tracking protect the courier's privacy?

The position is shared only while a job is active and only with the customer of that order and dispatch. Tracking stops when the delivery is completed or the courier goes offline.
